29 November 2003 ... Reading

I was updating my commonplace book the other day, and was feeling happily well-read. :) Here's the list of books I've finished this month...

  • Tales from Watership Down, Richard Adams.
I Love rabbit stories! So delightful.

  • The Science Fiction Hall of Fame, vol 1
Couple of my favorites in this collection... "Nightfall" by Isaac Asimov and "The Nine Billion Names of God" by Arthur C. Clarke. Nice, end of the world stories. :)

  • Great Expectations, Charles Dickens
I know several people who love this novel, and everyone seems to sing it's praises. The story is engaging, the plot and characters are fully fleshed out, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. But, I didn't particularly like it, and it took me forever to slog through the book on my Palm.

  • The New Diary, Tristine Rainer
Re-reading this one while I was following along with book discussions at one of the email groups I'm on. And also reading a suppliment from Creativity Advocate.

  • Vegan: The New Ethics of Eating, Erik Marcus
I started reading this a while ago, then quit, and now finally got around to finishing it. This book is a summary of research, pulled from many different areas. It covers health, ethics and the environment. And, honestly, this is a book that should be read by _Everyone_. I will be buying several copies and handing them out. There is also a free PDF version, which you can download from Marcus' website in exchange for your email... Vegan from vegan.com

The database program on my handheld tells me I've read 29 books so far this year. (It's actually 31 books because I read two books twice.) ('cause, you know, I do crazy things like that.) And since I got my Palm handheld, the book reading has definitely increased. Partly because reading and pressing buttons is so much fun, and partly because I can get free books by just sitting here in front of my computer (via Project Gutenberg).

I happened to finish up four of the above books within a couple days of each other, and I'm feeling a bit lost because I haven't picked up anything new to read. I thought about Heart of Darkness, because it's short. I read for about 15 minutes last night but nothing exciting is happening yet. heh. And there are several books laying around which I have abandoned several times over. Strange and annoying that this keeps happening.

In the abandoned catagory are: Drawing the Line (an animal rights book) and The White Goddess (um, historical / mythology / poetry um type book).
