What wonderful foods did you bring home from the grocery store?

Midweek Munchies: What RIFT is contributing for the week

This is the Saturday Market edition of the Munchies... We bought a couple things at Saturday Market and a few more things at our natural food store, Market of Choice.

Saturday Market is a gathering of local artisans near our downtown. There are arts and crafts and plenty of hand made stuff. There is some kind of live music playing, or people giving speeches, like today. (I heard the guy on the mike talking about CO2 emissions, but it was way too crowded for me to even think about hanging around to listen to him.)

And there's stuff from the farm. It's all organic, and even better, it's all local. So, yay. Expensive, but we are trying to save the world here!

Two weekends ago we got some yummy asparagus. Today we got a small cucumber for 1.50$, and a handful of small carrots for 2.25$. Lots of lettuce and leafy stuff for sale. The basil tempted me, because fresh basil is the most wonderful thing in the world and dried basil in a shaker is yucky. But when you buy basil, then you have to buy pine nuts, and I just didn't feel like it. Maybe next time.

Then off to Market of Choice. (I'm typing down the prices of everything so I can compare and contrast with Safeway prices later.)

Bulk Nutritional Yeast 8$/pound. yum, I love this stuff. The instant I got home, I cooked up some pasta just so I could eat my nutritional yeast. ha.

Boyfriend found some Broccoli and Asparagus. The broccoli was organic and cost 1.39$/pound.
Kettle Chips local food which I don't get to eat since boyfriend picked out flavors I don't like. humph. ;)

Willow Run Margarine on sale for 1.55$
Agave Nectar double sized container for 6$
Tahini which I happened across when I found the agave nectar... I've never bought this before. All I know is that it's sesame seeds mashed up like peanut butter, and I've seen some recipes that call for it! 4.30$ for a one pound jar.

Amy's American Burgers 4$, I like the vegan Amy burgers a lot better than Morning Star or Boca... but Safeway doesn't sell Amy burgers. eh.

Tom's of Maine toothpastes 4.50$ Tom and Kate sold out to evil Colgate not too long ago, and I might boycott them but I love the crazy flavors too much. Gingermint is my most favorite. I also got a tube of Orange-Mango. If Colgate can get more flavors of Tom's into Safeway, and at a more eye-level shelf... that would be a good thing, but Colgate is still evil and will probably degrade Tom's high earth- and animal-saving standards. :(
