In a moment of crazy insanity, I signed up at NaBloPoMo for a month of daily blogging. I don't even know what I was Thinking! I have so many projects going on... I have been working really hard on my postcards and my current crocheting project. The crocheting will possibly be done in a week and a half. The postcards are neverending. Last few days I've been doing some doodles. I got this book, Keys to Drawing with Imagination, and instead of just reading it, I decided to actually do all the exercises. And the first exercise is to do six doodles. So I'm doodling.
Along with that, I have some "homework". Actually quite a lot of homework. Which I'll type about later. Some good books I'm reading. Working on my paper journal. Significant Other has been taking good care of our garden, so that's one thing I don't have to worry about! And not to mention the chores I've let build up. And now I have to type every day as well! |

Because it is now the weekend, and I absolutely have to make the most of it. Well. First I had to get distracted at GoodReads... It's been a few months since I've updated the books I've read. Fortunately (or unfortunately) I've not read many books since the end of March, so this was not a very time consuming distraction. And then I made a couple of postcards. I still have a good handful of return postcards to send out. Plus, I am Almost at 100 sent postcards at my PostCrossing! yay. And now! What's next?! There's just so many projects calling to me! :) |

It did occur to me that I would eventually have to get out of bed. Because the guinea pigs will be hungry and demand their breakfast. Then I decided it would be fun to play with them on the floor... And that was the thought that excited me enough to get out of bed.
I wore the guinea pigs out with play time, then let them do their own thing on the floor. Twitch was playing with the stuffed animals, and taking some piggy naps next to them. :)

It's a guilty pleasure, tho. Fireworks and the celebrations surrounding them are not animal friendly -- terrifying to most of the non-human people, not to mention the animals you are eating -- and, of course, not earth friendly either. On the other hand, US independance day (yesterday) is one of the few major holidays that isn't quasi-religious. And people don't even blink when you ask for a soy dog to go with your corn on the cob.
So anyway. I love fireworks. My supervisor at the day job loaned me her tripod, and it was absolutely brilliant! I set it up, punched in my camera settings and pointed it in the right direction. When the fireworks started I just clicked the button a few times. I barely even looked at the camera. So I was still able to enjoy the fireworks. And I got a bunch of kind of decent photos! Yay. It was fun.

SO is very good about going down to the garden every day to water the plants. Except over the weekend, we got lazy and didn't go on friday or saturday. With the stupid heat wave we were in (93°F / 34°C, bleh!) I was worried that all the plants would be droopy and dying. But they were all perfectly fine. Either they have good roots or all the weeds protected them from the evil sun. :) ha. One of our tomato plants has died: the Oregon Spring tomato we got at Saturday Market. But still there are five others, and the Cherry tomato plant has several tiny tomatoes growing on it. Yay. Each of the two strawberry plants has a single blossom. :) The Cilantro is blooming, so hopefully we will have loads of little cilantros next year. Four cucumber plants and two butternut squashes are still small but busy growing. None of the broccolis came up, neither did the green onions, and the garlic starts have withered away. But my wild flowers are looking lovely... all kinds of flowers and I don't even know what they are! I do think we have several (volunteer) sunflowers growing. This makes me very happy, but SO wonders why he has to water "weeds". ha, I think our weeds are the best. Nobody has weeds like we do, that's for sure. laughs. |

The Water-Babies by Charles Kingsley 1863, 274pgs, tags: "fairy tales" "chimney sweeps" "juvenile fiction" It looks interesting and I have a fascination with water-based science fiction. So I grabbed it and fixed it up for reading on my Palm handheld. And then I got sidetracked by this .EPUB file extension. Apparently it's all the rage for ebooks. Except my handheld can't read it. Supposedly MobiPocket will read it... but I really hate that program (because it does a very crappy job handling page numbers). And then I found a program which will convert from EPUB to PDB (an eReader file, the software I prefer for reading ebooks)... ABC Amber EPUB Converter (20$) Okay, AND we're back from the sidetrack! I used to read loads of books from Project Gutenberg. I love that web site. Free books! All of them! Yay. Here are some good, random books... ∞ Some of Cory Doctorow's books. If you like modern fantasy. His most popular books are Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom and Little Brother (not yet at Gutenberg). I enjoyed Little Brother, I've not read Down yet. ∞ Charles Darwin :) I have read all of Darwin's major works and I very much enjoy reading him. My favorite is The Voyage of the Beagle. ∞ And my absolute favorite find on Gutenberg... A.A. Milne's Not That It Matters. I have read this little book four or five times and it stays on my handheld for all time! Almost every single essay amuses me and makes me smile. The Goldfish essay is the one I remember best, and it makes me grin just thinking about it. In fact, it may be time to re-read! :) |

Then I realized that if my stomach had exploded, I was probably bleeding internally and I was going to die in a few minutes. "I'm only 36," I thought to myself. "It's sad when someone so young dies. But actually I've had a pretty good life. Okay. Let's get this over with, huh." laughs. So. I didn't actually die. And the pain eventually resolved itself into nausea. And I never did throw up. But I did call into work and spent the morning in bed wishing I would throw up. Or die; either way would have been fine. Instead, and inexplicably, I slowly got better. And then I got up, had a massive headache, and lived happily ever after. |

Last month, I ran across a website and decided to sign up for some freebies... Shop 4 Freebies... They just happened to have a Kiss My Face sample on the day that I visited. I needed a separate email account, because I knew I was going to get some spam if I kept doing freebies. So I spent a couple weeks cleaning out my Hotmail account. I had mostly abandoned that one, tho I was getting some good newsletters there. I had about 100 emails to go through. But that got done, and now there are just a light handful in the inbox. Yay. Now. My real email. The kind that ends with @static8.com... That is the most serious problem. 200 emails in my inbox, 50 of which are unread. Not to mention the horrifying spam... Today I got 72 emails, only 9 of which were legit. I don't even know why I have to deal with that crap... my free email accounts do perfect spam filtering, I see none of it. But the email that I actually pay for I have to look at dozens and dozens of spams every day?! (well. Granted my hotmail account gets about 3 spams a week, whereas my static8 account gets over 500 spams a week! laughs!) Okay, anyway. Back to the 200 problem. I've not cleared out my email since january, and that's what happens, I guess. So, I am going to make it my goal to get that all cleared out this month. I will read and delete the stuff I don't need to keep. I will hit the reply button a few times. And I will move the keepers into their assigned folders. ∞ Current Email Total: 168 |

Oh sweet weeds. laugh. Yeah, okay, I love the weeds. The day job wore me out today, so I was too tired to even pull up the ones that might strangle the "real" plants. eh. maybe later this weekend.
The Tiger Eye is so lovely and happy. I'm glad we planted it in the front of the garden so everyone who walks by can see it!
One of the strawberry plants. Both of the strawberry plants have a couple tiny strawberries growing! Oh, yay!
And a random wildflower growing on the left side wildflower patch. Don't know what he is. On the right side wildflower patch there is some kind of daisy plant which has taken over where the garlic and green onions used to be. And I think there was a Poppy in there as well. I should look at the list of species in the wildflower seeds I threw down and figure out what everything is! ∞ Current Email Total: 146 |

When I woke up from my nap, I started working on my paper journals. At some point last year, I decided I would write (and print) (and draw) (and whatever) on normal copier paper, and then bind up the papers at the end of the month into monthly journals with my Bind-It-All. I love the Bind-It-All: I bought bulk 1/2inch O-wires for it so I will never run out and can make hundreds of double spiral bound notebooks! My monthly journals include all my Static8 blog entries, and my postcard stats and whatever random articles I feel like printing up from the Internet. Unfortunately, the monthly journal papers tend to stack up. Because making a journal cover has somehow become tedious. I've got the last three months to bind up, plus three months from last year! sheesh.
I started with june, and that went well enough. It's all bound and pretty now... well, semi-pretty: the printer did start running out of yellow ink as I printed the cover. So. Oh well. The picture shows the june journal, all bound up, on top of my new lap desk (flipped over to show the padded side), Lap of Luxury Lap Desks: the fabric is just so brilliantly colourful! The problem was may... I had so many photos, I decided to make front and back covers! Sadly, having to deal with so many photos on one page -- the front page has 8 high res pics on it -- that the computer just threw up his hands and said "jeez! I have 256megs of RAM okay?! I cannot deal with this! It's too much!" poor baby. So now I'm thinking about buying a new computer. ∞ Current Email Total: 103 |

Today I finally got caught up with my PostCrossing... I have all 9 of my postcards travelling, and I've scanned all my received pcs and uploaded them to the site! I'm at 99 postcards sent... one more registered and I'll be able to send out 10 postcards at a time! Yay postcards! :) I was so involved in the postcard thing, that I almost forgot to make bread today. ACK! Well, it would not have been the major tragedy I thought, simply because we still had two halves of a loaf in the freezer. Which is good, because I must have my bread! I've been making my own vegan bread in the bread machine for several years now... and I will never -ever- go back to store bread. It tastes funny. You can taste all the chemicals and junk they put in and it does not taste good! When I am focused and organized, it takes me exactly 10 minutes to set up the bread in the bread machine. That includes clean up time. And then, about 3.5 hours later, fresh, delicious, wonderful, vegan bread! |

Feels good, ya know. But made me think about all the other little projects I've Not touched! ∞ I didn't finish my dog blanket! I've only got 6 rows left... maybe 1.5 hours of crocheting. So close! ∞ I bought a cable several months ago to connect a hard drive to the computer via USB port. Yeah, that cool little toy is still in its box. ∞ I got some magazines on CD a few weeks ago... Unfortunately my computer no longer recognizes the fact that it has a CD/DVD player. sighs. Really, really, seriously need a new computer. ∞ Never mind the piles of dirty laundry on the closet floor. I pulled down a clean teeshirt and noticed huge holes in the armpits. ack. I need to go through my closet and repurpose some of those shirts! ∞ I keep saying I'd like a new web site design. Yep. ∞ Reading. In june, I read one whole book. wow, huh? Last year at this time, I was probably reading two books a Week! and now look at how pathetic I am! *weeps* heh. And these are just the projects off the top of my head that I've been thinking about in the past week or so. Give me a few more minutes and I'll tell you about the Peter Rabbit books I want to desktop publish and bind, the other crocheting projects, the surprise treat packages I want to send people, my abandoned drawing project, my abandoned digital drawing project, and, and, and. ∞ Current Email Total: 97 |

We have these blank Hand Color Charts free to download, which you are supposed to print up on the paper you usually draw on and fill in yourself, as you buy markers. But we also sell Hand Color Charts that have already been filled out, to stores who want to display true colours but don't want to take the time to fill out the chart themselves. So, that was my homework. I got to bring home every single Sketch Marker! And the time I spent filling out the charts would be paid in markers! Oh Sweet Joy Well. It was sweet joy thinking about it. Actually doing it: eh. It started out okay. It was fairly tedious, and required pretty high focus. But the first five were okay.
The next set, I tried doing 11 at a time. I screwed up a chart by putting a darker colour in the wrong space. Ack, but it was okay because I just started. Continue working. For hours. and hours Then I screwed up another one... I was about 2/3 through that one and Oh Sweet Frustration! I considered tearing up that stupid, stupid colour chart into little itty bitty bits and stomping on the bits and screaming. So. Doing Hand Color Charts. Not so much fun. I got 14 good ones and now Marianne wants her markers back. So I took her markers back, and I got paid today and this makes me so happy I can forget all about the stomping and screaming! All 24 of our glitter pens and 3 wide markers. sighs of happy. |

Anyway, I told her it was just micro-blogging, and someone else said they didn't understand the point of blogging: "They just complain about all the stuff they're not getting done, and they feel guilty because they didn't do this or that... Why don't they just get off the computer and go do their stuff?!" I had to laugh! Because I'm constantly complaining here about the stuff I don't have time to do! *shakes head with a smile*
Okay. I could pledge to only type about the projects I'm working on or finished with. Trouble is, if I don't type about the projects I don't currently have time for, I might forget about them and never do them! heh. Well. It's my Scanner personality... I get more ideas for projects than I have time for. And at least I don't feel "guilty" about not working on all my projects, because I am working on a ton of other projects! But... I am now aware that there might be a problem: my blog might be boring when I type about the things I'm not doing! ∞ Current Email Total: 96 (and I've been playing with my spam settings all week, slowly getting tougher and tougher with the spam filters... today I only had 11 spams in my inbox and 116 in my spam box. I did have to pull two real emails out of my spam box tho, so I'll have to keep a close eye on that for a while. Yay, Significant Other and I ate our first crops today, grown in our very own community garden plot! Two pea pods and they were sweet and tasty!! The five tomato plants all seem to be doing okay. Except the cherry tomato that we got from Saturday Market, which is doing wonderfully, with little green tomatoes all over the place! The two strawberry plants we got are getting ever more busy with blooms. The cilantro is starting to make seeds I think. The volunteer sunflowers are about waist high or more. And all of the flowers we bought are still blooming. But they are all becoming overwhelmed by the weeds. Guess I'll have to do some killing this weekend, darn it. ∞ Current Email Total: 98 |

Huge! It's 3feet x 3feet 8inches. It was supposed to only take a month. but then my mom visited in that month. and then I just got lazy. :) So it actually took 8 weeks, a total of 22 hours working time. My first go at adding colour... the zig-zag didn't zig very much but now I know better for the next one! And I think there's probably a better way to switch colours, to make the transition smoother... I'll have to look that up.

My newest unread dead-tree books, I keep on a pile on my printer...
The older books are in a box in my closet, simply because I don't have room to have them all out all the time. Tiny Townhouse! Unfortunately, out of sight is out of mind, and I might never get around to reading those!
My unread ebooks I keep in the "unfiled" folder in my eReader program on my Palm handheld. Actually, I've forgotten to move a couple of the books I've read out of this folder: Little Brother and The Water-Babies. Just lazy like that. The Procrastination book and Not That It Matters, stay in this folder all the time. I re-read them. :) And the FSF is my magazine subscription to the Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction. Yep, I'm way behind! I haven't even downloaded the June/July edition yet! Probably need to re-read that Procrastination book again. ha. |

I used to write in my journal every day, without fail. But this year, it's gotten a bit haphazard, maybe only three or four days a week. eh. I'm trying to focus a bit more on it.
I've been putting a quick doodle at the top of my pages with my copics... The wides are especially fun to play with. When I got my free one (from my Copic Certification in may) I used it to draw lines on my blank white paper. Four or five stripes across the paper... and I ran out of ink in about a month! ha. So, I'm a bit conserative with my three new ones! Thus, just the design at the top!
The three wides I have are B24 Sky Blue, G21 some kind of green, maybe Willow? and YR04 some kind of orange. Um, yeah. You'd think I would at least know the colours of the markers that I have... but no... There are 344 colours, right, I can't be expected to have all the names memorized! Anyway, I'm drawing on green paper, so the exact colour doesn't matter! And I've been writing with my new glitter pens. The glitter doesn't scan of course. But the wavy page was written in Pitch Black glitter and the date on the plaid page is in Chocolate glitter. Yay glitter. It makes me happy looking at it! :) |

And, oh crazy global warming, it's supposed to be horribly hot here for the next week or so. Maybe even hitting 100°F (38°C) I am annoyed already (because we don't have air conditioning anywhere: at home or at work). Blah!!! I hate the hot weather. Fortunately, it doesn't last very long up here in mid-Oregon.
7:50pm... SO says, from downstairs, to look out the window, now. I look, Ack, MUST have camera NOW! Two deers, with velvety antlers, are walking down the sidewalk! We live in the city... but we have enough green space within the city that the deers and the racoons and whoever walk through on a fairly regular basis. It's nice, but I really worry about them. Most of the wild people have a clue about the cars and stuff, but accidents do happen and it's tearful when they do. I'm pretty sure the pictures didn't come out well. It's generally a bad idea to take pictures through the window screen! heh. But, if I can clean them up, I'll post them tomorrow. :) |

And evidently I need to read Dunayer's other book, Animal Equality: Language and Liberation since being correct (and vegan) with language interests me! Anyway. You may have noticed the other day that I typed "deers". This usage comes directly from my reading of Speciesism... To remind readers that any group of nonhumans consists of multiple individuals, I often use uncommon (but accepted) plural forms that end in s: fishes rather than fish, squids rather than squid, minks rather than mink. As noted in The Merriam-Webster Concise Handbook for Writers, hunters, fishers, and trappers generally refer to their victims with plurals identical to singluar forms: two "quail," three "trout," four "beaver." Such usage blurs the victims together, de-emphasizing their individual sufferings and deaths. Nods. |

Current outside temperature: 101°F / 38°C The guinea pigs are downstairs in their crummy little "summer home". (uh, which is actually the biggest guinea pig house you can buy.) It's almost 10 degrees cooler there, so they might survive. Trouble is, the house never cooled down last night (and prob won't cool down tonight, even more), and we've still got at least two more days of 100°+. eh.

I've not made cookie bars in an age, tho. It always feels like I have so much to do. All my projects, you know. I should give myself a break! Guinea pigs (downstairs with a fan) are okay, tho Boo is not feeling well. As for me, I'm dealing with a cold that just gets worse every day. Just let me die, 'kay?
Here's an interesting list. A list of the UK's best loved novels. The list was compiled back in April 2003, but it's been making the blog rounds in a slightly different form. Of course, I prefer to cite the original... Here's the first fifty, the purple one's are the books I've read....

(There's no proof that this is a true statement, tho.) What I meant to mention yesterday about the terrible heat: The all time high temperature for the area is 108°F, 42°C which happened 9 Aug 1981. We've not beat that record: the high on tues was 106° and wed was 105°. Today is "cooler", the high is supposed to be 93°, 34°C... tho I don't think it got that hot. I do wish it would magically go back to the normal temperatures for this time of year. Doesn't a high of 83°F, 28°C sound just blissful? :) Stupid global warming anyway.
A huge shout out and thank you to my Significant Other who has kept me supplied with cold water, and making sure I'm still alive and was out running errands for me today. He is some kind of awesome. The best kind.
So anyway. Tomorrow I'm going to try to get back to my regular life. Go to the day job for a few hours. Come home and play on the Internet for a few hours. Relax over the weekend. It's the end of July, and will be the end of my daily blogging. Kind of an ignoble end, with the sickness and the complaining. But maybe for August, I'll just keep relaxing. Not take on any daily projects. Maybe watch some movies and read some books. |

Stop. Breathe. Allow yourself the luxury of doing nothing for a moment, or an hour, or even a day. It is in emptiness that inspiration will appear. heh, my trouble is too much inspiration, not enough stopping and breathing! *laughs*
So. I started the month with 200 emails in my inbox... and right now I have 18!! Yay me! These last few require a bit of reading or a bit of a response. So it might take me a week or so to get through those. I hope I can keep my inbox at this manageable level... but I'm incorrigible: it'll be back to 200 by december, I'm sure. ;)
And it's the last day of the month, and my last regular blog post. Taking a break for the month of august. Seriously... if I type something here that even mentions some kind of new project in august... just please slap me down and remind me to relax. :) |
