Belated Banned Books Week
sun 4 oct 2015

Banned Books Week was last week, but I was too busy reading to type up a post. haha! Yay Reading!

some of my banned books

From the 46 banned books on the Classics list, I've read two more from last year, so I'm now at 11...

4. To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee
5. The Color Purple, by Alice Walker
7. Beloved, by Toni Morrison
9. 1984, by George Orwell
16. Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley
17. Animal Farm, by George Orwell
24. Invisible Man, by Ralph Ellison
33. The Call of the Wild, by Jack London
40. The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien
45. The Jungle, by Upton Sinclair
57. Sophie's Choice, by William Styron

I've just added one book from the Top 100 from 2000 to 2009, bringing my total to 14 books read...

4. And Tango Makes Three, by Justin Richardson/Peter Parnell
6. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, by Maya Angelou
8. His Dark Materials (series), by Philip Pullman
10. The Perks of Being a Wallflower, by Stephen Chbosky
17. The Color Purple, by Alice Walker
21. To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee
23. The Giver, by Lois Lowry
26. Beloved, by Toni Morrison
36. Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley
69. Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury
74. The Lovely Bones, by Alice Sebold
80. A Day No Pigs Would Die, by Robert Newton Peck
88. The Handmaid's Tale, by Margaret Atwood
90. A Wrinkle in Time, by Madeline L'Engle

When I started looking at the Top Ten Lists of each year, I discovered that I had read at least one book from each list! Except for two years: 2005 and 2003. Ack! So my goal is to read a book from each of those Top 10 lists!

I'm on a banned book reading streak! So far I've read:

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, which has been on the yearly top 10 lists since 2010, and has won a ton of awards!

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks which has faced a very recent challenge in september. This book has also won several awards. And it's totally fascinating. I finished it in less than a week and had a hard time putting it down!

And in a bit of weird synchronicity, today (Oct 4) is the day Henrietta Lacks died in 1951.

And I just started Bridge to Terabithia which is on the Top 100 list and on the 2003 Top 10 list (for my goal).
